Sodium Bi-Carbonate is also a very well known substance to raise pH or to stabilise pH. Pool stores sell bicarb as “Buffer“…
To raise the alkalinity of a pool using sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), the general guideline is:
- 1.5 kg of sodium bicarbonate increases alkalinity by 10 ppm for every 50,000 litres of pool water.
To determine the amount of bicarbonate needed for your pool:
- Measure your current alkalinity (ideal range: 80-120 ppm).
- Calculate the pool’s water volume in litres.
- Determine how much you need to raise the alkalinity.
For example, if your pool holds 50,000 litres and you want to raise the alkalinity by 20 ppm, you would use 3 kg of bicarbonate.
Always add in smaller amounts and retest to avoid over-adjustment.
