Bulk bi-carb soda (sodium bicarbonate), food grade, for business and industry
Viva Blu bulk bi-carb soda is food grade sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) in 5 kg, 10 kg and 25 kg bags. It is used by food manufacturers, water and wastewater operators, cleaning businesses and maintenance teams that need a safe, versatile alkali at bulk prices. It is also known as bicarb soda, baking soda and, in the pool trade, buffer.
Industrial and commercial uses
- Food manufacturing: a food grade raising agent and acidity regulator for bakeries and food producers.
- Water treatment: raising alkalinity and buffering pH in process water and water storages, giving a gentle, controlled rise without the sharp pH jump of stronger alkalis.
- Wastewater: an alkalinity supplement in biological treatment systems, where low alkalinity can stall nitrification and destabilise pH.
- Acid neutralising and spill response: a low-hazard alkali for neutralising acid residues and small acid spills, kept on hand where acids are stored and used.
- Cleaning and deodorising: a mild abrasive and odour absorber for commercial cleaning, bins, drains and kitchens.

Handling and storage
Sodium bicarbonate is one of the lower-hazard chemicals we sell, but treat it with normal care. Avoid breathing dust and getting powder in your eyes, and wear gloves and safety glasses when handling bulk quantities. Store bags sealed, off the floor, in a cool, dry place, because bi-carb soda absorbs moisture and can cake. Keep it separate from acids.
Also used in pools and spas
Pool technicians and commercial pool operators use bi-carb soda to raise total alkalinity (commonly kept at about 80 to 120 ppm) with only a small effect on pH. About 0.84 kg raises total alkalinity by about 10 ppm in 50,000 litres. Add about half the dose, circulate for at least 6 hours, then retest. To raise pH quickly, use soda ash instead. Delivery and pickup
We ship bi-carb soda within Australia. Brisbane metro delivery is an $8 flat rate, free on orders over $300; other areas are charged by location and weight, and the exact cost is shown at checkout. Orders are handled within up to 2 business days. Delivery usually takes 1 to 3 business days in Queensland and up to 7 business days elsewhere in Australia after dispatch. Free pickup is available from our Windsor, QLD warehouse. See our shipping policy.
Frequently asked questions
Is bi-carb soda the same as sodium bicarbonate and baking soda?
Yes. Bi-carb soda, bicarb soda, baking soda and sodium bicarbonate are the same chemical, NaHCO3.
What is sodium bicarbonate used for in water treatment?
It raises alkalinity and buffers pH gently in process water, water storages and pools, and supplements alkalinity in biological wastewater treatment.
Is Viva Blu bi-carb soda food grade?
Yes, it is sold as food grade sodium bicarbonate.
What bag sizes are available, and can I buy in bulk?
Bags are 5 kg, 10 kg and 25 kg. For regular or larger orders, register for a B2B account or call 0402 981 808.
What is the difference between bi-carb soda and soda ash?
Bi-carb soda (sodium bicarbonate) mainly raises alkalinity with a small pH effect. Soda ash (sodium carbonate) is a stronger alkali that raises pH much more.
How much bi-carb soda raises pool alkalinity?
About 0.84 kg raises total alkalinity by about 10 ppm in 50,000 litres. Add half, circulate, retest, then add more if needed.
